Chemical Peels Q&A

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use various substances to address common facial skin blemishes and problems such as:

  • Blocked pores (blackheads)
  • Acne
  • Dull, rough texture
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Scarring
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation

Chemical peels remove dead skin layers to reveal fresh, unblemished skin underneath. A chemical peel enhances your skin’s texture and tone and makes it glow with vitality. ElevateHealth Aesthetics uses the PCA SKIN range of professional chemical peels.

What kinds of chemical peels are available?

There are many different chemical peels with varying intensities. The most common are glycolic chemical peels, which promote collagen production to smooth out wrinkles and reduce skin hyperpigmentation (dark patches). They’re also good for treating acne.

PCA SKIN chemical peels also use trichloroacetic acid (TCA), lactic acid, and salicylic acid. Depending on your needs, the peel may contain substances like tretinoin (which treats acne) and vitamin C, a potent antioxidant.

Chemical peels come in various strengths (30%, 50%, or 70% solution) for anti-aging treatment and skin restoration. The more powerful the chemicals, the more dramatic the effects you achieve. The 30% peel is a mild, superficial peel, while the 50% is a medium-depth peel.

Dr. Geracimos helps you choose the type of chemical peel that best suits your goals and skin type.

How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels are exfoliators, removing layers of old skin to expose the healthy, younger-looking skin underneath.

Dr. Geracimos applies the selected chemical peel solution to your skin, keeping it on long enough to produce the desired results without damaging the tissues or causing excessive discomfort. She then removes the peel, and the skin below it starts drying out.

As the old skin dries, it begins to peel away. With a strong chemical peel, the process takes 3-4 days. Afterward, you have a fresh, revitalized complexion. A series of treatments can make a considerable difference to your appearance and significantly reduce aging.

Will my chemical peel be painful?

Mild chemical peels aren’t too uncomfortable, but peels are likely to cause more discomfort as they get stronger.

Medium to strong peels can cause burning or stinging sensations, and you might develop swelling and reddened skin after your treatment. Strong peels can sometimes cause blistering too.

You can apply cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication to ease any discomfort.
